ATONE 3 Naked In Winter : Kgrind

Here's an invitation to get lost in the lushest
warmest most exotic of daydreams. It's not hard to imagine spending the better part of a week gazing psychotically into the distance, a glazed, faraway look in your eyes inspired by Atone's soothing dub lullabys. '3' is the
third album from the Sydney conglomerate headed by Andy Fitzgerald, with input from Ali Omar and a host of others. This is the kind of dub that comes with a money back guarantee when it comes to bass, translating just as well on the dance floor as off. Verena Power.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Atone3
Naked In Winter Records
Obviously I'm gonna be biased in this review (buy the goddamn record if ya wanna find out why) but shit, you should'ive heard the tracks that they weren't including on 3, the appropriately
titled third album by Sydney post-tech-dub duo
Atone. Originally intended as a EP, 13 out of
about 100 tracks were carefully selected for
maximum listening pleasure, and pleasure's
what you get (almost 70 minutes!) with yet
another release from Sydney that is nothing
short of world class, sharing company with
Tooth/Purdy, Moonrock and Telemetry
Orchestra in that regard.
Opening with the bong-sucking sounds found
within Jah Cryptosperidium (Mix 2) over some
heavy dub/trip-hop grooves, this serves as an
ideal introduction to the blunted journeys into
sound that Atone are loved for. The chilled
vocals of Kye take the lead in I Can See and
Web, and the odd moment of sheer fun (Steve-0 Short or New Piano) deserves recognition by the esteemed Warp label, who'd also go for the more Aphex like Amb 2. Scan 1v2 or I Be There tend to head off to the dancefloor and away from the couch, which is kinda uncharted territory for these guys, so let's hope they have
a hit! C'mon radio, give 'em some airplay! And
some money!

(Naked in winter Records)
Despite what another street
press (and friend of Atone)
says, you probably have heard
of them. If not they are one of
the most respected electronic
producers in the country.
Depending on who they are at
the time. Having previously
included Ali Omar in the lineup
Andy fitzgerald has single
handedly made an album that
is ahead of its time. Listen to
this in ten years and 1'll happily
apologise if wrong. With the
most progressive (not as in
progressive trance) dub sounds
around Atone have outdone
themselves on this, their third
release. The quiet but noisy
introductions make way for
aggressive percussive sounds
which contrast to the relaxed
dub beat they make. Vocals.
including rhymes courtesy of
Kye, add to a style and sound
that it's hard to imagine
melding with lyrics. Standout
tracks: all the tracks. Buy. it's
good.

Self Titled
ATONE 3 (ALBUM)
(NAKED IN WINTER RECORDS)
Many people's first point of contact with
A-Tone, like mine, came through the Dub
For The Masses compilation album. The
first and eighth songs on this self-titled
disc feature two other mixes of the track
"Jah Cyptosperidium" which appeared on
the previously mentioned compilation. If
you expect the remainder of the album to
follow suit in the new wave dub vibe, then
prepare for a shock. While Atone 3
continues to produce tracks with Islowly
morphing subby bass, the other sounds
utilised take the tracks into very different
sonic turf. With almost acid-like sounds,
Atone 3 throws together backward loops,
Latin samples, sweet vocals, raps and
loose drum beats into a kind of sound
collage. There's definitely a dub aspect to
this disc, but in no way could you call
Atone 3 exclusively dub. This fact
however is more of an advantage than
hindrance. For fans of the group there's
also a live version of "Bones" which was
recorded in France.

Well, Atone haven't lost their Music to
Smoke Spliffs By sound, that's for sure
This is one laid back album, a litte sexier
than the Atone we've heard in the past
with tracks like 'I Be There', 'Bones' and
Web all having a slightly Bristol feel
about them. The stand out track would
have to be 'Steve-O Short' with it's
melodic meanderings. 'Amb 2' and
Fuckhate' are great ambient tracks that
truly take you on a joumey through the
music. My only complaint about the
album is that it does seem a little mini-
malist in tems of production, but it
makes up for it with wicked tunes

ATONE
3 (Creative Vibes)
Alone, by definition, is "to make amends or repatriation for the offence of a crime', Well if Bardot be the crime (no offence to any Bridgettes) then this once-British Sydneysider
has come up with the goods. His album, 3, is a work of fine dub style, mixed with some tender and never overpowening vocals to produce an elixir of some beautiful cruize.
The infiuences for the tunes, or at least some of the samples used upon the tracks, have a distinctly English trip-
hop sense about them (think Tricky's Maxinque, Massive Attacks' Blue lines, and Chiant of a Poor Man from Leftfeld's
Rhythm & Stealth). But instead of sounding done, it has a progression, a continuous flow, reworking old for new in IIne with the steady sway of fine dub movement.
The best thing about 3 is its solidity, the album doesn't rely upon any track to support its worth, rather its entirety is a mood and it remains. So for all those fans of the chill this little
piece is worth every penny of the investment, Love it Dare K.
